Cohannet Academy, located within Taunton State Hospital, is a Joint Commission-Accredited Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP). As the only all-female, secure DMH residential treatment program in New England, Cohannet Academy offers a safe and structured environment for youth referred by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (MA DMH), many of whom also have involvement with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the Department of Youth Services (DYS).
Our trauma-informed care model, combined with sensory-integrated therapies and specialized educational services, ensures that each resident receives comprehensive support tailored to their unique needs. With a focus on minimizing re-hospitalization and promoting community integration, we empower young women to build the skills needed for a successful transition beyond institutional care.

Our clinical services are grounded in the evidence-based ARC (Attachment, Regulation, and Competency) model. We offer a comprehensive therapeutic approach that includes individualized, group, and family therapy led by master's-level clinicians.
We also provide onsite medical and psychiatric care focusing on proactive health and wellness, sensory-integration skills training, and specialized education. In our vibrant classroom settings, youth are encouraged to develop their strengths and resilience, supported by experienced residential counselors who help them explore new skills and opportunities.
Cohannet Academy’s residential services offer continuous therapeutic support 24/7, with a focus on consistent programming and daily community outings. Our highly trained residential counselors provide crisis intervention, prevention, and management, and individualized treatment planning that emphasizes adaptive coping skills through sensory-related interventions.
Youth are given the opportunity to experience the challenges and joys of growing up, with access to a wide range of activities, including cultural celebrations, outdoor adventures, volunteer work, and team sports.
Cohannet Academy ensures comprehensive medical care through our onsite medical team, which provides routine care, health and wellness education, and collaboration with a nutritionist. Our medical director/psychiatrist works closely with each youth's family and community providers to maintain continuity of care.
We prioritize sustaining relationships with medical professionals from the youth's home community, ensuring continued access to specialized care as needed for optimal health and wellness.
