Trot On logo

Trot On offers innovative psychotherapy services to youth, adults, and their families who are dealing with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, often rooted in complex trauma. By integrating equine interaction into therapy, we provide a unique, embodied experience that fosters connection and healing.

Our services also support individuals struggling with substance use or those at risk, offering early intervention and counseling. Our outpatient services are available through a partnership with a farm in Harvard, Massachusetts. We accept most major insurances. We also offer short-term treatment for youth ages 12-24 who are dealing with or may have risk factors for substance use. This treatment is funded through the Department of Public Health at no cost to participants.

Our Approach

Trot On utilizes Equine Therapy for Complex Trauma (EFT-CT) to harness the strengths and resilience of each individual we serve. Our approach is rooted in trauma-informed, strengths-based treatment tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant.

EFT-CT is specifically designed to address the core areas affected by trauma, including emotion regulation, interpersonal functioning, executive functioning, and self-identity development. By focusing on both physical and relational safety, EFT-CT fosters reflective connections that can be particularly healing for individuals impacted by trauma.

Horses, like humans, are social mammals with complex emotions. Interacting with horses allows participants to learn about horse behavior while gaining deeper insights into themselves. These interactions build trust, support perspective-taking, and offer experiential learning opportunities. Rather than just talking, participants actively practice new skills, which enhances engagement in therapy and promotes meaningful behavior change.

Evidence-Based Treatment

EFT-CT incorporates principles from the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) framework, a comprehensive model recognized by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) as a promising practice for youth exposed to complex trauma. All JRI clinicians are trained in the ARC framework and integrate these principles into their practice. They offer tailored interventions that may include individual therapy for children, caregiver education, and parent-child sessions.

Working with Horses and a Mental Health Practitioner

Participants work directly with a licensed mental health practitioner who has specialized training and certification in horse-human interactions. Individual therapy sessions, typically lasting 45 minutes, are structured to meet the client’s specific needs. Activities may include learning about horse behavior, observing horses, interacting with them, and participating in caretaking tasks such as grooming and leading. These sessions do not involve horseback riding but focus on building connections and therapeutic routines with the horses.
