Student-Centered Educational Services

We offer comprehensive support through collaboration between educators and clinicians, creating personalized learning strategies while maintaining open communication with families.

Academic Programming

Granite Academy offers a rich, Common Core-aligned curriculum delivered by licensed content and special education teachers. Small class sizes (8:1 or 12:1:1 ratios) allow for individualized instruction, supported by Chromebooks and a state-of-the-art technology center. Students can explore electives, vocational programming, and dual enrollment opportunities with local districts and community colleges.

Instructional Approach

Our educators and clinicians collaborate to tailor instruction to each student’s needs, unlocking potential through creative, strength-based strategies.

Home-School Communication

Teachers maintain regular contact with families through email, phone, and scheduled meetings. Weekly updates keep the community informed and engaged.

Student/Parent Portal

Through Gradelink, families and students can access grades and schedules anytime via desktop or mobile app.

IEP Development

IEPs are created through a collaborative, student-centered process that values every voice. Plans are data-driven, strength-based, and focused on building independence for life beyond high school. All programming aligns with district diploma requirements.

Clinical Services

Granite Academy’s clinical team starts with the belief that our students have a desire to be successful and have the ability to make progress. Our Master’s level clinicians provide ongoing, individualized support through regularly scheduled individual and group sessions, real-time therapeutic processing, family outreach, and collaboration with collateral contacts. Students have access to full-time nursing and sensory integration support.

Treatment is trauma-informed and strength-based, and focuses on the ARC theory: attachment, regulation, and competency. In addition, the concepts and interventions developed as a part of Michelle Garcia Winner’s social thinking philosophy – which focuses on increasing social understanding – and focuses on teaching skills to improve social functioning across various settings, informs all aspects of our students’ days.

Granite Academy’s approach to clinical services includes other treatment modalities such as CBT, DBT, and person-centered treatment to form an eclectic approach to working with each student. Clinicians develop treatment plans with a focus on each student’s specific needs given their history, current functioning, future goals, and the built-in sources of support in their lives

Individual Counseling

Students meet regularly with clinicians for personalized support and skill-building. Clinicians are also available as needed to help students apply strategies in real-time. Together with caregivers, they set meaningful academic, social, and emotional goals tailored to each student.

Group Counseling

Weekly group therapy sessions are designed around student interests and needs. Groups focus on emotional regulation, self-awareness, social skills, and creative expression. Examples include:

  • Personal Resource Education – Covers self-advocacy, healthy choices, and emotional tools.
  • Self-Care, Therapeutic Sketching & Mindful Crafting – Promote emotional regulation through hands-on, reflective activities.
  • Pragmatic Language & Social Games – Build communication and perspective-taking skills through interactive play.
  • Creative Mode – Encourages collaboration and creativity through multimedia projects inspired by student interests.
  • Identity Groups including SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Alliance), ROOTS (Reclaiming Our Origins Through Self-Exploration), and Men’s Group

Service Coordination

Clinicians work with caregivers and outside providers to ensure consistent, goal-driven care across settings.

Sensory Support

Sensory tools and strategies are integrated into daily routines, with personalized plans used throughout the school to support focus and regulation.

Therapeutic Animals

Students can engage with animals—like goats, sheep, a rabbit, fish, hermit crabs, and a comfort dog, golden retriever — for emotional support, coping, and skill-building. Animal care is also part of enrichment classes and student jobs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Improve emotion regulation
  • Strengthen problem-solving skills
  • Enhance communication abilities
  • Promote overall student growth and wellbeing

Soccer & Basketball

Our sports teams offer students a chance to experience competitive play, teamwork, and school spirit. Games are held with other therapeutic day schools, and highlights include our spirited “Students vs. Staff” matchups. School Assembly Monthly assemblies recognize student achievements and strengths, creating a meaningful space for celebration and peer acknowledgment that reinforces community and empowerment.

School Show Performances

Students shine in three annual showcases: Ciderhouse Jam (music), Poetry Slam (spoken word), and the Talent Show (variety acts), celebrating creativity and self-expression. August Highlights at Granite Academy

Company One Theatre https://companyone.org
We are excited to continue our partnership with Company One Theatre this fall. A select group of students will work weekly with professional actors and artists to prepare for our Fall Poetry Slam. This six-week collaboration focuses on self-expression, creativity, and performance, giving students a unique opportunity to explore their voice through art. It all leads up to a live performance on October 22, 2025.

Night of Excellence

Granite Academy’s Night of Excellence is our annual fall event designed to warmly welcome caregivers and guardians into our school community. This evening offers families the opportunity to follow their student’s daily schedule, meet our academic and clinical teams, and experience the therapeutic and educational supports that make GA so unique. Unlike traditional open houses, Night of Excellence is intentionally personal and interactive. Families connect directly with staff in small group settings, gaining a deeper understanding of classroom goals, teaching strategies, and the tools we use to support each student’s growth.

Community Service Partnership: New England Wildlife Center

As part of our commitment to responsibility, compassion, and hands-on learning, Granite Academy partners with the New England Wildlife Center. Each week, a rotating group of high school students participates in community service, helping care for animals in need. Students walk to the Center, where they may assist with preparing food, cleaning habitats, supporting enrichment activities, and learning from wildlife professionals. This experience supports graduation requirements while building empathy, teamwork, and real-world skills.

Transition Services

Granite Academy offers a range of transition-focused opportunities to prepare high school students for life after graduation—whether their goals include college, career, or greater independence.

Our transition services include:

  • Skills for Living: Skills for Living Classes provide all students with a foundation in planning for the future. With staff support, students identify postsecondary goals and prepare for their chosen paths—college, trade programs, or the workforce.
  • Independent Living Skills: Independent Living Skills Classes include functional, community, culinary, and career skills. These classes are designed for students who benefit from more targeted, experiential instruction delivered at a slower pace.
  • Job Readiness Program: Job Readiness Program offers on-campus pre-vocational opportunities. Students apply for positions, engage in work experiences, and build skills needed to become reliable and successful employees in the community.
  • Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission Partnership: MassAbilities Partnership supports juniors and seniors through a weekly Pre-Employment Training Services class. This program adapts the standard curriculum with repetition, pacing, and hands-on learning tailored to students' learning and emotional needs.
  • College Prep: College/Trade School/Career Preparedness includes an annual College & Trade Fair, Career Fair, job shadowing, campus tours, and 1:1 support from the Transition Coordinator. Select students also enroll in dual enrollment college classes to prepare for postsecondary academics.
  • Community Involvement: Community Involvement is built through partnerships with local organizations. Students participate in volunteer work that fulfills service hours, builds resumes, and provides meaningful, real-world experiences.

Granite Academy individualizes transition planning based on each student's needs, preparing them for their next steps, whatever path they choose.

Our son was accepted from day one as he is. Granite Academy works to meet him where he is, not vice versa. To be accepted in this way is so helpful and enables him to feel less anxiety and more understood. He knows that on a good day or a bad day, there are supports in place to help him. To help him learn and continue his education while being recognized as a student who is an individual with mental health issues and learning issues. This is the starting point where he can begin to let his guard down and know everyone at Granite wants the best for him.

Joanne & John, Parents

Granite Academy isn't just a school, it's a place where you find yourself, where anything can be accomplished as long as you tried and pushed yourself through. There wasn't an option for failure, you picked yourself back up and continued to march on and succeed. The things I saw over there opened my eyes, people helping each other and supporting each other. The staff were always ready to not only educate you, but to help you achieve your goals and fix your problems.
