YouthHarbors

YouthHarbors serves homeless and unaccompanied high school students, and a select group of college students from our four participating public colleges who are homeless or facing housing instability at our K-House program in Malden. By providing comprehensive support—including rental assistance, housing search help, and life skills workshops—YouthHarbors ensures that these students can focus on their education and future success rather than mere survival.

The program meets each student where they are, offering personalized, wrap-around services that address their immediate and long-term needs.

Who We Serve

YouthHarbors supports ambitious, hard-working students who are determined to complete their high school education despite the significant challenges of homelessness. Living in "survival mode" makes it difficult for these students to concentrate on schoolwork, as they constantly worry about basic needs like shelter and food.

YouthHarbors helps these students find stable housing and provides the tools and skills they need to focus on their education and future success.

Our Model

YouthHarbors begins by identifying high school students who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Eligibility for the program is based solely on being unaccompanied and homeless.

Once immediate shelter needs are met, YouthHarbors staff work to find stable, long-term housing for the student, which could involve housing with extended family, friends, suitable roommates, or occasionally with a host family.

Individualized Life Skills Workshops

YouthHarbors offers personalized workshops tailored to each student’s needs, which may include:

  • Career-Oriented: Finding a job, writing a resume, improving interview skills.
  • Domestic: Cooking safely, maintaining an apartment, managing roommate relationships.
  • Academic: Planning educational goals and connecting with tutors.
  • Financial: Managing a budget, paying bills on time, saving for the future.

Clients typically stay in the program for 6 to 12 months, after which they are eligible for alumni services.

Participating Schools and Colleges

YouthHarbors collaborates with high schools in Malden, Everett, Boston, Somerville, and Lynn, as well as colleges like Roxbury Community College, Bunker Hill Community College, MA College of Art, and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
