Trauma Informed Weight Lifting Certification Program

Join Co-Directors Mariah Rooney, MSW, LICSW & Candace Liger, NASM - SPS, CE for an 8-week certification program. In this program you will learn:

  • The neurophysiological, psychological and emotional impacts of Complex and Developmental Trauma and PTSD and how they may manifest for individuals and groups throughout the life cycle through understanding of the theory and research behind weight lifting as an adjunctive treatment for trauma survivors
  • Specific trauma-informed approaches for building and maintaining safety in fitness/gym spaces and coach/client relationships
  • How to approach business practices, marketing, language, and processes from a trauma-informed lens
  • The knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate TIWL sessions (with individuals or small groups) as an adjunctive treatment for trauma in their communities

Through didactic and individual learning, mentorship and in-depth personal exploration - you will learn the why, how, and when to use TIWL within your coaching practices and professions. You will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate TIWL sessions (with individuals or small groups) as an adjunctive treatment for complex trauma and PTSD in their communities.

The program is completely online; no in-person attendance is required. It is comprised of live sessions along with self-study over the course of 8 weeks. This is not a self-paced course. Register here.

Rachel has been a part of the JRI team since January, 2000. For over 20 years, Rachel has been working in the field of human services assisting families with accessing and navigating services. Rachel received her Bachelors degree in psychology and Masters Degree in Public Administration from Bridgewater State University. She was promoted in July 2005 to Family Networks Program Director where she closely worked with the Department of Children Families for 10 years ensuring that children and families received the highest quality of individualized services ranging from community based through residential care. Rachel is very dedicated to helping the individuals she works with and is committed to improving the lives of children and families. Rachel’s passion for creative service programming inspires her in her role as JRI Service Navigator.
