The Trauma Center at JRI, based in Brookline, a nonprofit provider of trauma-informed care to children and families in Massachusetts, last week announced it has been awarded a $633,405 federal grant to help those affected by human trafficking.
JRI's new website murals were created by students at The Victor School, Anchor Academy and Granite Academy.

Preble Street recently joined The Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute in Massachusetts as the state lead for Maine in the New England Coalition Against Trafficking, funded by the U.S. State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, and will be working with Maine partners as well as those in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island to develop and implement efforts to increase outreach, identification and service referral for victims of human trafficking across New England.
This gripping film features a highly diverse cast of seven adolescents and young adults who examine the shared and unique challenges faced, mistakes made, and growth attained in the struggle to transcend legacies of developmental trauma. Unexpectedly insightful, unsentimentally poignant and always real, Never Give Up is an offering of collective wisdom, inspiration and hope for young people ensnared by adverse life experiences such as chronic neglect, violence, abuse, bullying, and exploitation from seven peers and mentors who came just before them and found their way through.
The Trauma-Sensitive Yoga program, which was developed by David Emerson at the Trauma Center at JRI, will be used to help prevent opioid addiction among women and children.
“This is not street level. This is social media. It’s all online. This is a friend of a friend, girls recruiting girls in their friend circles. It’s not street-level recruitment,” said Michelle Loranger, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County.
JRI, a nonprofit provider of trauma-informed care to children and families in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, has announced the addition of Monalisa Smith, Founder, President and CEO of Mothers for Justice and Equality (MJE), to its Board of Trustees.
